5 Ways to Personalize Your Wedding Ceremony

Your wedding ceremony can be beautiful AND representative of your uniqueness as a couple. Here’s a few ways to make that happen:

  1. Be [more] intentional with ceremony decor– I remember when I worked at an elementary school and we were converting to a magnet school, they told us it should “scream the theme”, and the theme of your wedding is…well, your love. The ceremony space is (likely) this is the first thing your guests are going to see. Sure, flowers are gorgeous…but think outside the box. You CAN incorporate a lot more of what makes you a couple. For instance, if you’ve been on a lot of vacations together, maybe the aisle is lined with hand-painted signs representing each of your travels. Or if there was a specific song playing when you were proposed to, maybe a custom canvas with those lyrics are displayed somewhere. For our wedding, I lined the aisle with pictures of us as a couple in chronological order. If you two play poker, you could put a custom card on each seat. Honestly, the possibilities are endless!

2. Have wearable welcome favors for each guest– How cool would it be to show up to a wedding, and have wearable favors for each guest?! Whether positioned on tables or on each guest’s chair, it’s a way to involve the guests and make them feel a part of it all. It’s also an opportunity to reinforce any specific colors/theme. For example, think mini boutonnieres, hairclips, or sunglasses. It could be leis or Mardi Gras beads…whatever you want! This will only make photos more fun!

3. Choose a unique unity ritual– A lot of couples I work with tend to shy away from doing a unity ritual because it doesn’t “represent them”. The classic unity rituals involve wine, sand, or candles. Maybe you’re into one of those unity rituals…or maybe not. I’m here to tell you, there are NO rules, so make up your own! I’ve had a couple take a shot of whiskey together, and I thought that was pretty awesome. If you and your fiancĂ© are super into baking bread, maybe you start a dough together!

4. Surprise your guests with the processional & recessional music– Just because I’m guilty of picking a classic recessional song, you don’t have to be. There are certain songs that are truly more representative of you and your love. Maybe it makes you laugh, or maybe it’s the song you shared your first kiss to, or maybe it’s from your favorite movie. My tattoo artist told me she walked down the aisle to the Jurassic Park theme song, and that it made for one of the best moments between her and her dad- the surprise, the laughter, all before a moment that can be nerve-wracking.

5. End your wedding ceremony with a first dance – WHY DO PEOPLE WAIT?! I mean seriously- everyone is beaming of love and happiness, and all eyes are on you. The ceremony energy is usually at its peak after the first kiss, so you might as well capitalize on the moment by going straight into your first dance. After all…it is your wedding!
